Father of Boaz. Member of the tribe of Judah, of the clan of Perez, descendant of Hezron and Ram (Rt. 4:18-21; Mt. 1:4; Lk. 3:32). The form Salma appears in the Heb. text. of Rt. 4:20.
Salma is the spelling also found in the Hebrew text. from 1 Chron. 2:11. There are expositors who consider the Psalm of Rot. 4:20 to be the ancestor of the Bethlehemites mentioned in 1 Chron. 2:51, 54, but this genealogy goes back to Caleb, not Ram.
The difference in lineage probably indicates another character, although it is possible that there could be a union of both genealogies in this man.
(b) Mount mentioned in Jud. 9:48; possibly the same one mentioned in Ps. 68:14. He was near Shechem.
(c) The easternmost cape of Crete (Acts 27:7). Its current name is Cape Salmone, or Plaka. Some authors propose Cape Sidero, 24 km further north.
