SEVENE
City at the extreme limit of Egypt (Ez. 29:10; 30:6). This city, in the south of Egypt, on the edge of Ethiopia, still existed in Roman times.
Vestiges of Sevene are found near Aswan, on the Egyptian bank of the first cataract, opposite Elephantine. It is there, or on the neighboring island, where the garrison guarding the border was located (Herodotus 2:30).
Already at the time when the Persians occupied Egypt, a colony of Jews maintained a schismatic temple on the island (Elephantine Papyri).
