SHEBA

SHEBA

Town that emerged from Cush (Gen. 10:7), and settled in southern Arabia. Sabá is a dialect variety of the terms “Sheba” and “Sheba.”

According to Assyrian inscriptions, this nation was located, in the 8th century BC, in northwest Arabia. In Ps. 72:10, Sheba associated with Sheba designates a remote southern region.

The allusion to Sheba associated with the mention of Egypt and Ethiopia seems to indicate an African land to which numerous descendants of Cush had emigrated (Is. 43:3; 45:14).

Josephus identifies Sheba with the island of Meroeh (Ant 2:10, 2), a large area of land between the Nile and the Atbara, its tributary. According to Strabo (16:4, 8-10), the port of Sheba and the city of Sabai were on the western coast of the Red Sea.
