SHULAMMITE

SHULAMMITE

Young woman mentioned in the Song of Songs (Song 6:13). This term appears to be derived from the name of the city of Shunem. In the LXX it is translated sounameitis, or Shunammite.

In the time of Eusebius, Shunem was called Sulem; Nowadays it is called Sõlem or Sûlam. The Shulammite form may have been preferred to the Shunammite form because of its assonance with Solomon, in Heb. “Sh’lomoh.”

In that case, it would be a kind of title, feminine form of Solomon, rather than a proper name.
