SICAR
City of Samaria, near the land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph, not far from Jacob’s well (John 4:5; cf. Gen. 48:22). Ancient commentators had supposed that Sychar was a gr. alteration. of Shechem. The old Syriac version also bears the name of Shechem.
Today, Sychar is believed to have stood on the site of the town of Askar, on the eastern slope of Mount Ebal, about 3 km east-northeast of Nablus (ancient Shechem) and 1 km north of the well of Jacob.
