SISERA

SISERA

General of a Canaanite army, which occupied northern Israel. Defeated at the Kishon River, Sisera fled further north, probably to join the leader of the Canaanite coalition.

He tried to take refuge in the camp of Eber the Kenite, who was not at war with the Canaanites. Jael, Eber’s wife, invited Sisera into her tent, and killed him while he slept (Judges 4:5; 1 Sam. 12:9; Ps. 83:10).

The Nethinim, called “sons of Sisera,” were probably descended from prisoners captured at the time (Ezra 2:53; Neh. 7:55).
