SOWING

SOWING

In addition to the common reference to this agricultural act (see AGRICULTURE, SEASONS [OF THE YEAR]), sowing is used figuratively of the dispersion of the Gospel, as in the parable of the sower, explained by the Lord himself.

When He came to Israel, He found no fruit, and He Himself became the Sower, sowing the good seed, which fell under different types of soil, and with various results.

Despite the influence of Satan, trying to prevent the seeds from taking root, some fell on good soil (not good by nature, but prepared by God), producing fruit as a result (Mt. 13:3-43).

Whenever the Gospel is preached, the seed is being sown, and undoubtedly, as in the parable, it falls on different types of soil. God’s servants will reap in due time, if they are not discouraged.

Sowing is also a beautiful figure about putting the body into the ground. The Christian who sleeps in the Lord is sown as a natural body, in corruption, dishonor and weakness; but he will resurrect a spiritual body, in incorruption, in glory and power (1 Cor. 15:36-44).
