TEKOA

TEKOA

City of Judah (1 Chr. 2:24; 4:5) in the desert, not far from En-gedi (2 Chr. 20:20; cf. vv. 16, 22). Rehoboam fortified it (2 Chron. 11:6). Homeland of the prophet Amos (Am. 1:1).

In Nehemiah’s time, the poor of this city helped rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, while the greater inhabitants of Tekoa were indifferent (Neh. 3:5, 27).

The name has persisted in Takû’a, a town located about 9 km south of Bethlehem, on the top of a hill.
