TURBAN

TURBAN

It is very difficult to distinguish between the three terms: turban, tiara, diadem (see HEADBAND, TIARA). The fact is that these headdresses were usually made of a band of canvas wrapped around the head. The term “mitsnepheth” (Ez. 21:31) means “wrapped around.”

In the Talmud it is stated that the priest’s turban was made of a long band of fine linen sixteen cubits in length (cf. Ex. 28:39).

The tying or wrapping of the turban is mentioned (Ez. 24:17), and having one of various colors (Ez. 23:15). It was also a feminine headdress (Is. 3:20).
