Term frequently used in the OT when mentioning a city and "its villages"; On many occasions it does not mean anything other than its "suburbs", not in the sense of separate towns.
The two main words used are "bath", "daughter" (Num. 21:25, 32, etc.); and "chatser," "village" (Josh. 18:24, 28, etc.).
The villages were not walled, and were the rural extension of the walled urban centers, on which they depended politically and administratively.
