ZELOFEHAD

ZELOFEHAD

“shadow of fear”, that is, “protection against fear.” A man of Manasseh, of the family of Machir, of the branch of Gilead, of the house of Hepher. He had no sons, but five daughters (Num. 26:33).

At their request, Moses received instructions from the Lord to introduce into the legislation a clause that attributed to daughters the inheritance of the dead father without sons (Num. 27:1-8).

This law had a complementary clause: the heirs had to marry within the paternal tribe, so that their assets would remain within the Nm tribe. 36:112. The lands of Zelophehad were east of the Jordan.
