Discipline is another word for training. It’s having (and following) a clear set of expectations, requirements, and consequences in order to create an environment that will bring out the best in an individual or in a team, family, military unit, or class.
The Bible says that God disciplines His children in the same way that good parents train their kids—teaching values, imparting wisdom, setting boundaries, correcting misbehavior—God trains us.
Such discipline isn’t pleasant; it’s painful (Hebrews 12:11). But it’s the only way we’ll ever grow into better people.
Athletes who get annoyed at their coach for having to spend time in the gym are shortsighted. They don’t realize that the coach has their best interests in mind.
To an infinitely greater degree, God has our best interests in mind. He does not want us to fail. God disciplines us for His glory, for the world’s good, and for our own growth in godliness.
What are ways you have seen God discipline His children?
