The New Testament refers to anointing the sick with oil as part of the healing process. James speaks of this ritual in his letter: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (5:14).
And Jesus’s disciples “anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them” (Mark 6:13). Catholics refer to the anointing of a dying person as “extreme unction.”
