ASAPH
“gatherer” (Heb.).
Five people bear this name in the OT:
(a) A choir director in David’s time, who is once called “seer” (2 Chron. 29:30). He was descended from Gershom (1 Chr. 6:39; 15:17, 19; 16:5, 7, 37, etc.). Twelve psalms are attributed to him (Ps. 50, 73-83).
It appears that his position was hereditary (Ezra 2:41; 3:10; Neh. 7:44, etc.).
(b) Father of Joah, chancellor of King Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:18, 37; Is. 36:3, 22).
(c) A Levite whose descendants dwelt in Jerusalem after the exile (1 Chron. 9:15).
(d) A Korahite, whose descendants were keepers of the tabernacle in the time of David (1 Chron. 26:1).
(e) An official, probably Jewish, guards King Artaxerxes’ forest in Judea (Neh. 2:8).
