BASAN
Fertile region east of the Jordan in the upper center of the Yarmouk. Famous for its rich pastures (Mi. 7:14; Jer. 50:19; Nah. 1:4), its oaks (Is. 2:13; Ez. 27:6), its livestock (Deut. 32:14; Ps. 22:13; Ez. 39:18; Am. 4:1).
Bashan belonged, successively, to the empire of David and to the northern kingdom, Israel; later it was an Aramaic possession (2 Kings 10:33); under Tiglath-Pileser III Assyria; in the second century BC. C., Nabataean; It finally belonged to the kingdom of Herod and his successors.
The account of the victory over King Og of Bashan accentuates Israel’s rights over this region (Num. 21:33-35).
