BEERSEBA

BEERSEBA

(a) This name was given to the place where Abraham and Abimelech agreed not to harass each other, confirming the agreement with an oath. It later became the home of Abraham and Isaac, who also dug a well there.

(b) A city also bears this name (Gen. 21:14, 31-33; 22:19; 26:23, 33; 28:10). It became part of Simeon’s inheritance (Josh. 19:1, 2); after the establishment of the Israelites in the land, it is constantly mentioned as the southern border of the land, just as Dan is mentioned as the northern limit; Thus, to say “from Dan to Beersheba” was to give expression to the entire territory, even in the days of Solomon (1 Kings 4:25).
