BEHEMOT

BEHEMOT

It is a large animal, described in Jb. 40:15-24. A fairly widespread opinion is that it is the hippopotamus. However, a rigorous examination of the text does not support this idea.

If the contemporaneity of dinosaurs with man is recognized, discarding the hypothesis of a long transformative development of life on earth, the description agrees admirably with that of a brontosaurus, a large vegetarian reptile. Cp. especially the description of its tail (Jb. 40:17).
