When someone died, the house was filled with friends, especially women who cried with great scandal (Mark 5:38).
They washed the body (Acts 9:37); They wrapped him in a sheet or bandages (Mt. 17:59; Jn. 11:44).
The rich anointed the corpse with perfumes and aromatic spices (John 12:7; 19:39). Sometimes they burned perfume (Jer. 34:5).
The corpse was carried in a coffin or litter (2 Sam. 3:31; Luke 7:14).
Burial was always done in a cave or in a tomb carved in rock, and unlike what was done in Egypt, coffins were not used in Israel (Gen. 25:9, 10; Mt. 27:60).
