HANGING
Very common form of punishment in Egypt, Persia and Palestine; After the criminal was executed, his corpse was hung on a tree or post.
If the corpse was left at the mercy of birds of prey, the punishment was even more degrading, and exemplary for the people. Then it was buried secretly and at night (Deut. 21:23). It was also a way to commit suicide (2 Sam. 17:23; Mt. 27:5).
