JANES and JANNES.
Name the two Egyptian magicians who tried to oppose Moses (2 Tim. 3:8). This allusion refers to the events described in Ex. 7:11, 12, 22; 8:3, 14, 15; 9:11.
These passages give neither the number nor the name of the magi, but the Targums and the Talmud allude to them. One or both of them are mentioned by Pliny and Apuleius, who mention Janes and Moses as famous magicians of antiquity.
A Pythagorean philosopher of the 2nd century AD, Numenius, mentions Janes and Jambres as sacred scribes of the Egyptians (Gr. "hierogrammateis").
