KNIFE

KNIFE

The Israelites used, to kill animals, or to tear them into pieces, a knife whose Hebrew name denotes an instrument for preparing food (Gen. 22:6; Judges 19:29; cp. Lev. 8:20; 9:13 ).

Another name synonymous with sword designates the flint knife (Josh. 5:2) and perhaps the barber’s razor (Ez. 5:1).

The scribes cut the tip of their style with a penknife (Jer. 36:23).

The Egyptians used a stone knife to open the corpses they embalmed (Herodotus 2:86).
