He who passes gold or silver through fire several times, until the dross of the precious metal disappears (Zech. 13:9; cf. Ps. 12:6).
The operation is said to have come to a successful conclusion when the refined metal reflects the image of the refiner.
God is compared to a refiner of silver: he casts his people into the furnace of affliction, and withdraws them from it when he can reflect in his conduct the divine image (Mal. 3:2, 3).
