SEA

SEA

(a) Vast expanse of water, contrasting with dry land (Gen. 1:10; Ps. 8:9; Rev. 7:1-3; 21:1).

(b) A part of this vast expanse (Gen. 49:13; Acts 10:6); Large bodies of lake water also receive this name (Num. 34:11, 12; Mt. 4:18). The main seas that the Israelites knew were the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee (Lake of Gennesaret).

There are various biblical names that refer to the Mediterranean:
the big sea,
the sea of the Philistines,

the western sea (Zech. 14:8).
The Dead Sea is also called:
salt sea,
eastern sea,

Arabah or plain sea (see DEAD SEA below).
The Sea of Galilee was also called:
Cineret sea, and

sea or lake of Tiberias (see SEA OF GALILEE below (i)).
(c) The system of irrigation canals derived from large watercourses, such as the system of the Euphrates valley (Jer. 51:36, 42), and the Nile (Nah. 3:5).
