SEDIMENTS
New wine precipitates sediments that settle at the bottom of the barrel or jar in which it is deposited. Hence, drinking “to the dregs” means to drink completely, spared from the wrath of God (Is. 51:17, 22).
The phrase “it has rested on its sediment” is an image of unshaken wine (Jer. 48:11), used of the carnal tranquility in which Moab had been until the day of his trouble (cf. Zeph. 1: 12).
