THEFT

The Law of Moses punished the guilty of theft with full restitution, which was obtained, in case of need, by selling the guilty person’s possessions, or by hiring his services until the stolen sum had been collected (Ex. 20:15; Prov. 6:13; 22:22).

When what was stolen was an animal, double the amount had to be returned if it was returned alive (Ex. 22:3-8). If the thief had sold the animal or had rendered it useless, he had to pay quadruple, if it was sheep or goat; and fivefold if it was beef or cattle (Ex. 22:1; 2 Sam. 12:6; Luke 19:8).

The gold and silver were to be restored with an additional fifth. Kidnappers of people were punished with the death penalty (Ex. 21:16).
