ALEXANDRIA

ALEXANDRIA

City built by Alexander the Great to be the capital of his western empire. Founded in 332 BC, it was finished by the Ptolemies, who increased its wealth and splendor.

It became very populous and eminently commercial and cultural. His library was famous. It was there that the translation of the Septuagint (LXX), the Greek Old Testament, took place.

It is identified with the modern city of the same name, on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. It appears in the NT as the birthplace of Apollos, Paul’s companion (Acts 18:24); and as a port of registry for ships (Acts 27:6; 28:11).

Tradition claims that Mark was the first to introduce Christianity to Alexandria.
