GATEKEEPER

GATEKEEPER

In 1 Chr. 9:19-24 and 16:38 reference is made to the Levites serving the tent of the Tabernacle.

There were guards to guard the gates of the cities (2 Sam. 18:26; 2 Kings 7:10) and those of the Temple (1 Chron. 26:12); There were also servants who guarded the entrances to private noble houses (Mark 13:34).

When David organized the service of the Levites for the house of God, he assigned four thousand of them to guard the gates.

They did not all carry out this activity simultaneously: David divided them into orders, which should take turns in their function (1 Chr. 23:5; 26:1-19).
