JAW

JAW

(Heb. “lehi”).
The priest received the shoulder, curd, and jaws of the ox or lamb sacrifices (Deut. 18:3).
In a confrontation with the Philistines, Samson, brandishing a donkey’s jawbone that he found, still fresh, killed a thousand of them. He named the place of his deed Ramat-lehi (Jaw Hill; Judges 15: 9-17). In the story the name Lehi is used retrospectively.
