SPICES

They include various aromatic substances of plant or animal origin that were used in making incense, mixed with sacrifices or used for embalming.

Seven different Hebrew words and one Greek word are used to describe them. These are translated in various ways; for example, spices and aromatic incense, in Ex. 25:6; aromatic cinnamon, in Ex. 30:23; aromatic galbanum, in Ex. 30:34; aromatic spices, in Ex. 35:8; aromatic cane, in Cnt. 4:14; aromas, in Cnt. 5:1; odoriferous materials, in 2 Chr. 16:14, and drugs, in Mr. 16:1. Josephus mentions 500 censer holders at the funeral of Herod the Great.
