In Bible times, while a sword was valuable, a spear helpful, and a slingshot deadly, a soldier’s shield was his most important weapon.
Shortly after God called Abraham, He promised to be Jehovah-Magen to him, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward”

In biblical times, a banner was a flag or ensign attached to a pole that indicated the authority, allegiance, and identity of a nation. People who were under a banner together belonged together.

Birth is often described as delivery. Maternity wards are places where doctors and nurses deliver babies. This is because the process of birth is the passage of a life, a soul, from one realm to another, from the womb to the world.

A popular personality test compares people to animals. According to the profile, you are either like a lion, an otter, a beaver, or a golden retriever. According to the Bible, however, the creature we are most like—all of us—is a sheep.


When we think of healings in the Bible, we tend to think of all those jaw-dropping physical restorations: lepers made whole, the blind healed, the lame suddenly leaping through the air. Without question, these are marvelous demonstrations of God’s power.

In multiple hot spots of the world, you can find regions known as demilitarized zones. These are sort of no-man’s-lands between opposing nations or armies. Though you won’t likely experience whizzing bullets in such places, you will sense a great tension.

It is perhaps the most common, most haunting question we ever ask: “God, where are You?” We ask it in all kinds of situations: when our child is rebelling, when we’re in the emergency room, when we’re unemployed, when hope seems lost, when evil is winning, when death intrudes.

Here’s how that truth (that God is our righteousness) makes a difference in our lives: First, we can glory in God’s righteousness. Because God only does what is right, we can trust Him to keep His word.

It seems that nothing in this world is safe from change. Most brands we loved as kids look different today (if they even still exist). Famous hamburger chains now offer salads. Cable companies now offer telephone service.

It has been estimated that there are more than one million words in the English language. The Greek New Testament, by contrast, has only about 5,440 words. Of all the Greek words used to describe the Lord Jesus Christ, one of the more interesting is logos.

Imagine this scenario: Your new mail carrier arrives at your home to deliver your mail. But then, rather than continuing down the street after depositing a few letters and bills in your mailbox, he gets out of his truck and starts fixing your house.

Whether it’s a cheap apartment or a mansion, if you’ve got a place where you can kick off your shoes and just be, a place where you are loved and safe and peaceful, you are beyond blessed.

We are introduced to God as Creator in the first sentence of the Bible: “Bereshiet bara Elohim” (“In the beginning God created”). But the Almighty’s relationship with His creation certainly doesn’t end there on the very first page.

Moses witnessed God defeat the enemies of the Hebrew people. He celebrated God, recognizing Him as more than the King of the Hebrews but the King over all. Moses knew that God was the one who appointed and deposed Kings.

The Hebrew word for fortress refers to an impregnable stronghold, usually high up on a mountain. David, of all people, was familiar with such places. As a shepherd boy, he often had to seek out safe refuges for his flock.
